Sri Purandara Dasaru (Hampi)
Parampare: Sri Hari Dasaru

Pontiff #: NA

Successor of: Primary Desciple of Sri Vyasarajaru

Duration: 1406 to 1496

Summary:

· Known to be the Naaradamsha Sambhootha, born to Sri Varadappa Nayaka and Smt Radha Bhai at Puranadara Gad, near Pune as Sheenappa Nayaka (Krishnappa Nayaka)

· Born rich, to a Jewellers’ family, had good education and Sangeetha Paata, got married to Saraswathi Bhai.

· He was a spendthrift, never gave anything to anyone, inspite of being a rich merchant, while the wife did all good deeds like Daana Dharma.

· Once Sri Hari came in Brahmin’s disguise to ask for help for his sons Munji, where Nayakaru turned him down, and Wife gave her Precious Nose Ring. The Brahmin took the ring to the husband for sale, upon which he recognized, came home and asked the wife to show the ring. Unable to tolerate the humiliation, wife prepared to die consuming the poison and found the ring in the poison bowl.

· At that moment Nayakaru understood the reality, gave away entire wealth in Daana Dharma, came over Hampi in with wife and got blessed by Sri Vyasarajaru.

· From there onwards he was known as Purarnadara Dasaru, stayed along with Sri galu in the empire of Sri Krishnadevaraya.

· Some of the miracles attributed to Dasaru are:

o Extinguishing the fire on Panduranga Vittala’s anga Vasthra, sitting with Srigalu

o Balancing the Dwadashi parane with Srigalu without Ahnika

o Performing Naivedya to Sri Krishna with Annada Kalagachhu

o Hitting Sri Krishna (in disguise) with the vessel for the delay in getting water

and having to bear the brunt of theft charge on him (…leading to the composition of “Muyyige Muyyi theerithu”)
